IDOS Insurance - chapter coverage

IDOS Insurance - chapter coverage

Postby briblo » Mon Mar 26, 2012 10:42 pm

IDOS has event insurance that covers the events that IDOS sponsors such as the WCCO and Spring Gathering/Convention. We don't have the resources or legal authority to cover all the events, demos, DOGs and cookoffs of individual chapters.

From what I'm told from the insurance agents, the main reason for the insurance coverage is that we serve food and our food is ingested by other people who could get sick if we don't follow health code etc. The general premises of insurance is to have "care and custody" of the exposure.
Also, each state is regulated by it's own set of laws and rules regarding insurance. And each state can be vastly different in how, why, and what of insurance.

Our insurance is about $1000/year for 4 events.

I received an answer from our insurance agency about chapter coverage...

Here is his response.
Thanks for the opportunity to service the insurance needs of the IDOS.
I have reviewed the documentation that you sent and I have spoken with
the insurance company. Please keep in mind that one of the general
premises of insurance is to have "care and custody" of the exposure.
Also, each state is regulated by it's own set of laws and rules
regarding insurance. And each state can be vastly different in how,
why, and what of insurance.

So with all that in mind, the insurance policy that we have in force
will not provide coverage for the chapters located in other states.
Each of those would need to obtain their own insurance coverages.
Hopefully that provided you with answers and some background information.
Thanks again, and if there are any questions, please contact our office.

If our company insures one chapter, they need to do all chapters and then their exposure is suddenly worldwide and that would send our premiums up 6000%
So, the place you are doing demos, or cook offs or DOG's are not requiring insurance, I wouldn't worry about it. If they are, then I'm not sure what to do.
Maybe hook up with a larger organization like a city or fair or some venue that can cover you.
I've always done demos with a county fair or ISE or with Log Cabin Grub who had insurance already.

Hope that helps.
